99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall, 99 Bottles of Beer...

will NOT be our running song. Because I mean, by the time we got to 95 bottles of beer I think the running would get pretty difficult, what with the loss of motor skills and the dehydration and all. But Danny and I need songs to sing while we're running! I suggested Bohemian Rhapsody, but that might be a little too operatic for how stuttered and heavy our voices will be on the footfalls.

...Am I blogging two days in a row? My god, I AM! Fancy that.

Danny and I went on another nearly five mile run today, in my new shoes! I was advised not to do that while I'm still breaking in the shoes, but given the alternative of a five mile run in my old shoes... no-brainer. And I actually feel a million times better now than I did after our first five mile run. IMPROVEMENT! Breathing still pretty dang labored though... and I probably should not have filled up on pasta an hour before we left. Oops. But we looked gooooood in our spandex shorts.

Noticing some ankle issues that may be corrected through the shoes breaking in or may require a brace. My left ankle one summer swelled up inexplicably on a walk, and was painful to the point I was nearly crying. Doctor had no real explanation and was like, here, have a brace! I do have heat edema (my legs/ankles/fingers swell up in hot weather) so that might have aggravated whatever mysterious sprain or something I had at the time. But anyway, that ankle still bothers me sometimes, and it was screaming at me today during the run. Shhhhhhh. This is the story of my red left ankle.

Running again on... Tuesday I guess. So there may be an update there. In the last week I've lost about three or four pounds of my spring break weight (two weeks of pizza and alcohol and sitting on yer butt will do that to ya)!

Eye of the Tiger, Man.

This song reminds me of grocery shopping in my old neighborhood in Seattle. It would always play in the QFC by my house, and it was so hilariously overexuberant for a simple grocery trip. I wanted some boxing gloves and fancy footwork, punching out the rows of Hamburger Helper and dancing around the tumbling displays of apples. But more importantly, I think it is the absolute best motivational song for working out.

It was my birthday on Saturday, and through the generosity and support of my family I was able to afford two very important components that contribute to my new goal (which I will get into in a minute)... new running shoes and an MP3 player. I have been complaining about my shoes since Day 1. You all know this. NO MORE! I got some sweet Saucony shoes that feel like clouds and help me push off with each new step. I'm breaking in both of these beauties today... although I have not yet downloaded Eye of the Tiger to aid me.

The aforementioned goal relates to how I'm graduating in less than two months and have no goals. "Pursue internships and jobs" is pretty much what I'm telling people. Which means, "I am scared shitless of the real world; these seem like good ideas." So since I don't want to face the job market and the student loan payments in my future I decided to settle on personal goals. You know, those friendly, unintimidating things that make you feel good about yourself. And it was about time I set a running goal, since I've been aimlessly wandering and not progressing. I have been running in my absence from this blog, but I haven't progressed. That is, until Tuesday.

My wonderful new roommate Danny is like my much more pleasant and infinitely more attractive Mickey, the gruff New York attitude trainer from the Rocky films. With his company and motivation we accomplished a nearly five mile run on Tuesday (about three times longer than I've been running lately and almost twice my longest run... how embarrassing). We stopped a third of the way through to check out Fairhaven Runners, where I got my shoes yesterday. (We also checked out the hot sales guy.) My legs and hips have been paying for that run ever since, especially because I was in my old shoes, but I was so amazed that I actually went that far. Danny is training for an 8 mile downhill run on Memorial Day weekend, so at least once a week we'll be running together. That way, if I wuss out running on my own, I'll have to make up for it when we work out together...

So, I'm back, aaand hopefully here I will remain, because of my goal: work my way up to a marathon. I don't have a goal date set for this, because I don't know anything realistically about pacing myself. But if I am capable of doing a five mile run now--which is only 1.2 miles away from a freaking 10K--I don't think this goal is impossible. I'm on my way.

DOES NOT COMPUTE.

Cardio machines. I don't like to use them most of the time, because as I've mentioned the treadmill makes me dizzy, and many of the other ones you really set your own pace on (like ellipticals: I'm in charge of moving them, so no matter how much they up the resistance, I inevitably end up slacking and just going reaallly slow and not working out).

One thing I do like to use is the stair machine; either the old-school ones that look like a staircase or the ones with two levers for your feet and varying resistance. The old-school ones obviously just keep moving, so you can only slow down if you press the button to do so, just like a treadmill. The newer ones are such that the higher the intensity, the less resistance, so you will basically just end up standing on the ground and having to do more work to get back up if you don't keep moving. I love those!

But okay, aside from my love of stair machines, there is a problem with my using any cardio machine, and that is the calorie counter. It is hard when working out on these not to glance over and get some satisfaction out of seeing it negate the donuts or pizza or beer I might've had recently. But I find it to be soooo inaccurate! The ellipticals will often tell me that at the end of a 30-minute workout I have burned close to 300 calories, and a 20 minute workout on the stairs will say something like 100 or 120. Okay, that makes sense maybe, because the stair workout was shorter. But I sweat about twice as much on the stair machine. More sweat and breathing harder probably means I'm burning more calories, right? I don't sweat much as it is, so for these stair machines to get my hairline wet is impressive. And hence I just don't believe them, but I so want to.

The problem is what they take into account: they ask for age and weight. No height, no GENDER, nothing else. I could be a 6'0" male that weighed 125 pounds (eek) or a 5'6" female that weighed 125 pounds (which I am), and there is no way the two of us would burn the same number of calories in the same workout. So I call bullshit!

Well, enough about numbers and calories and liiiiieeeesss. I went to the gym today and did 30 minutes on an elliptical-like-thing, I actually have no idea what it was haha, then my usual round of weight machines for toning and then a mile of jogging! I took one lap of walking at the half-mile mark (a lap on our track is less than 1/10th of a mile) and I felt I could've kept going at the end of the mile. That's good stuff for me. Stress is fantastic fuel for working out and I really could've stayed at the gym longer, though I might've regretted it in the morning.

I was so looking forward to my workout that I forgot to mail an important package before the post office closed, but frankly I'm quite okay with that.

I also got to break in the new spandex shorts I bought to wear under my Soffes. So now I have no fear of revealing my underwear to the dozens of basketball players below the track, or anyone when I'm stretching, or doing those ridiculously suggestive hip machines. You know what I'm talking about. They're like stripper training, for god's sake, and if you don't have tight shorts on under your loose shorts, you might as well be a stripper right there in the gym. I can feel good about buying myself running-related things. It doesn't feel like splurging. It feels purposeful. I feel pretty purposeful about this running thing.

I'm working on these scrawny legs. They will be something. They will be magnificent! Mwahaha!

With great sameness comes great lack of things to say.

HELLO, my 9 loyal readers! It's been awhile! As the title suggests, I haven't been able to think of anything to say here recently. I haven't pushed myself to much longer distances, but I have definitely retained the benefit of the previous workouts, to where the same length and intensity workouts are much easier for me now. Mike is also improving, having a much easier time running and I'm pretty sure he's losing weight. We don't have a scale so it's hard to say for sure. Maybe he just appears svelte because I've been working out alongside him so I know the exertion he's going through!

I'm also fairly certain that my runners' legs are coming along nicely. I think it might be too soon to do a second set of pictures though. Yes? No? I'm not sure if I'm just perceiving my legs as looking nicer or if the effects would actually be noticeable in a photograph. Well, if you're dying for pictures I could oblige.

My blog just turned a month old on Saturday! And Mike turned 29 on Sunday! We were going to jog then; didn't end up doing so but we did go on a bike ride! ...A bike ride to get a burger. Hey, it was his birthday. And I had a veggie burger, because I don't do the whole meat thing, although it still left me feeling gross. I don't doubt they cooked it on the same grill as the regular burgers, but they must've also injected it with lard or something. It's a Gardenburger brand Gardenburger! How can you add fat to that?! I even opted out of the "special sauce." Me and fast food just don't mix.

So at this point we haven't jogged since Friday (although that was a nice urban jog of about 1.8 miles, the first half gradually downhill and the second half gradually uphill). It is of note that that's about .4 miles longer than we've gone before (at least as a consistent run without walking or stopping). I'm hoping to go out in about a half hour. It's rainy and cold tonight. Not sure where we'll go, but where ever it is, we'll certainly look dramatic with our wet hair and beads of sweat mixed with beads of rain on our faces.

A TMI post. Because there just had to be at least one.

In the last few days I have learned that PMS and jogging should never go together, at least not when you PMS like me. (I decided PMS could be a verb, too. Just roll with it.) My worst PMS symptom is sore boobs. Sore boobs + sports bra (see also: garment that is primarily designed to flatten, but in no way support, your chest) = very unhappy Lucy. If there is no one running towards me (since I look completely ridiculous doing this), I end up flattening my chest with my fists as I run, just so I can stand to jog without wincing. If anyone knows of a miracle sports bra to fix this problem, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, TELL ME! I'll probably have to wait awhile to be able to afford it... but it'd be good to know about.

Despite my... predicament, Mike and I braved the ever-greying, approaching-autumn overcast skies and drizzle to jog along the South Bay Trail again. Mike has a (distant) history of asthma and smoking, so in our first few weeks as runners, he's been having a rough time with his breathing. We're both breaking down barriers all the time, though, and we were able to run the whole 1.4 mile course to the park without stopping! Then we walked around the park and half a mile back down the trail before running the last mile. This is definite progress for him, and quite good for me too, since I haven't done anything like my three-mile jog of frustration lately.

I am now completely wiped out. I meant to eat, do dishes, shower, and go get some groceries--in that order--after we got back from the jog. I ate a little bit, and then my body disabled my brain and decided it needed a shower (dishes be damned, apparently). I didn't realize I was supposed to do the dishes first until I turned off the water at the end of my shower. I'm so clean now that I can't bring myself to do the dishes! And my legs hurt so much that groceries are going to have to wait, too. Plus it's still raining. But the progress is good enough for me.

Dramatic Running

Had a good run this evening. I've been having some housing-related frustrations that I won't really elaborate on here, but with school starting in just a couple of weeks, it's gotten me really stressed out. I decided that the best remedy, besides doing expensive things that I would ordinarily do (like go out for food or drinks, or browse around clothing stores), would be to go for a long run.

This of course made me think of all the dramatic running scenes in various movies. I thought this video was pretty cool. It was kind of like me, except I was running to The Grouch and Eligh, I was not in spandex, and I was not in a marathon. Okay, so it wasn't like me at all. I was by the water, though!

Or maybe it was more like this:

(Just wait for it, the song takes like a minute and a half to really start.) Maybe someday I'll have Mr. Gump's endurance.

Anyway, I went on the trail that Mike and I took three days ago. It's really close to my house, and it's flat and relaxing, with a great view of the water. I started running from the same spot. I got a little tired before I'd even made it to our original stopping point, but I just kept slowing my breathing when it got too labored. I kept closing my eyes and breathing, focusing on the music. I pushed through, and the struggle went away. It was easy to keep going. It felt so good. I made it the extra half-mile or so I needed to get to Boulevard Park (which is absolutely beautiful, by the way). I had jogged about 1.4 miles without stopping or even slowing down! This was a new feat in itself. When I slowed upon entering the park, I experienced what I think is the famed "runner's high."

It was basically a headrush that made me smile. My legs felt extremely heavy and exhausted, moreso than when I had been running. But my breathing slowed to normal in just a minute or two, and I felt relieved from the exertion, instead of just fed up and disgusting like I tend to feel after runs. I must be making progress all the time. I felt better about what had been stressing me out, and I was motivated to keep going. I went out for a long, dramatic, "I'm running away from my feelings" movie montage run: 1.4 miles wasn't going to cut it. So I circled the park on a slow walk, pausing at a dedicated bench. Unfortunately the memorial plaque had a damn typo on it (really? You can't get its/it's straight for a commemorative bench?!) so I had to get up quickly. I cannot deny the editor in my bones.

When I'd made the loop of the park, I started up jogging again. I passed a lot more people on the way back than I had on the way to the park. I got to be the jogger passing everyone on the trail! I'm meeting new goals all the time... Without fail, they would all turn their heads back to see me about 2 seconds before I went past. I don't think I imagined a look of congratulations on an older man's face--he seemed to be glad to see a college-age person staying active. I feel like a lot of college students in Bellingham jog or bike or go to the gym on a regular basis, but I was glad for the glance anyway.

I've used the gym at WWU many times, but I don't think I've ever really pushed myself there. Running on an elliptical machine and running outside are two very different things--and ellipticals never get me to break a sweat. They really don't. I'm not sure what it is, but I just can't get a good workout on those things. I never breathe as hard as when I'm really running.

I made it all the way back to my starting point without slowing or stopping as well, making a total of about 2.8 miles run! It's only been 4 hours and I'm already sore, so I hope tomorrow can be a "sit around and do nothing day" as much as possible. Except I need to go to the grocery store. And Value Village's Labor Day sale is on. I did labor pretty hard today, after all.

Happy Labor Day, everyone

Uphill Battle

So, I want to run. I have always hated running, and loved the idea of running. I watched enviously as runners deftly sped past me on trails, sidewalks, campuses... They never seemed to be experiencing any stress, shortness of breath, muscle fatigue, or anything. How long have these people been running? Did they just run right out of the womb?

In gym class I watched the tiny preppy girls lap me. They would complete the dreaded mile run in 6 minutes or less. I lagged behind, wheezing, clocking in at 11, 12, 13 minutes. My muscles ached, and I felt some sadistic chef had drug a cheese grater down my esophagus and through my lungs. I hated those girls and their bouncy ponytails.

I think it's important to add here, though no offense is meant, that I am not, nor have I ever been, overweight. People don't realize that overweight and out of shape do not always go hand in hand. Just as there are "overweight" people who eat healthily and exercise, there are also "normal weight" or "underweight" people who just generally suck at all things physically strenuous.

I'm raising my hand. I'm one of them. I'm very nearly 5'6" and at my heaviest was probably 136 pounds. I am now about 127. I'm not trying to lose weight by running. I'm just trying not to lose my breath running for the bus. I want to be a runner.

I want to speed past bewildered citizens on the trails of Bellingham! I want to have the coveted runner's legs. I want them. I have skinny calves. I have friends who complain they can't wear those hot knee-high fall boots because their calves are too big. Well, they don't fit me either. They make me look like Spinelli from Recess.
I would really like to see her with her shoes off. What are those, size 15 mens?

So my fiance and I have started the journey small. Three times now we have run about 2 blocks uphill. It takes us ten minutes round-trip and we get the cheese grater-on-lungs effect hardcore. My leg muscles feel like they're going to burst through my skin, Alien-style. I feel like the weakest person, huffing and puffing, skin still warm from having just left the house. But it must be working, because today we ran flat on a trail for about 1.5 miles. And I wasn't winded. Such a feat has NEVER happened to me. Ever. I have the endurance of American Apparel underwear. (Which is to say, none. I bought a pair once and the elastic came out of the stitching on the first wash. Just stay away.)

I give you my humble introduction into my silly little venture. I want to be a runner, just to see if I can. So here's my dorky unflattering "before" pictures. I should have some of my legs probably, too. But this post is long enough already.

Oh yeah. No sucking in the gut here. Sexy.

I'm a sadface because I'm still a wuss.
